Referring to the origin and historical development of a word. When examining the term “church” versus “ekklesia,” an etymological inquiry seeks to determine if the words share a common root or linguistic ancestry.

Semantic

Referring to the meaning or sense of a word as understood within its cultural and functional context. A semantic inquiry evaluates whether two words describe the identical concept or reality, regardless of their different origins.
